"... when I looked upon that ugly idol in the glass, I was conscious of no repugnance, rather a leap of welcome. This, too was myself."

We are all familiar - or think we are familiar - with the strangecase of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Since its first publication in 1886 it has become part of popular myth, retold in countless plays and films. But there is a hidden side to Stevenson's psychological thriller.

Stevenson's preoccupation with "that strong sense of man's double being" comes to the fore in the other stories included in this gripping selection. "The Body Snatcher" and "Markheim" both have protagonists from whom there is no clear borderline between decency and wickedness, innocence and guilt. Other kinds of dualism run through tales written in the Scots dialect, "Thrawn Janet" and "The Tale of Tof Laprik", taken from Stevenson's novel Catriona where the suprnatural is inseparably interwined with the everyday.
