Preface:

Demands for the efficient teaching of English for the needs of the legal profession inspired us thirty years ago to develop a textbook where both linguistic and legal approaches would be presented in the most satisfactory way. The legal language, by being so distinct and complex, requires a very good knowledge of both the legal profession and the challenges connected with English language instruction. The best solution was to form a team composed of teachers of English and of law.
The textbook “English for Lawyers” covers the basic terms and institutions of individual branches of law in the EU, UK, and the USA. It aims to prepare students to use the English language in diverse ways for their professional purposes: to acquire legal terminology, read legal literature, use and consult various handbooks and dictionaries, work independently in a variety of specializations and make written and oral presentations on different legal issues.
The textbook focuses on the legal language. It is by no means a textbook of law or comparative law but is rather a textbook of the English language for special, legal purposes. This determined the selection of topics which had to be made by taking into account both British and American usages. The approach offered in this textbook implies a necessary knowledge of the English language, and the selected texts and other materials contain fundamental legal concepts to enable subsequent independent and individual learning. The textbook is intended for teaching students at faculties of law and related higher education institutions in their first and second years of study. It is also recommended for lawyers who use English in their practice and for lawyer-linguists and translators.
The notes on legal terms following each text offer explanations of legal terms in the given context. The exercises aim to improve understanding of the topics, both legal and linguistic. Their purpose is to encourage repeated use of the acquired concepts and grammatical structures. Both the exercises and the explanations of the English grammar rules cover the sequence of linguistic problems as they arise in the given texts. In the course of all these years, in all 17 editions, we have made every effort to keep track of the new developments in the English language and to follow those of the relevant legal systems.
The last part of the textbook contains the English-English and English-Croatian glossaries of most of the legal terms used in the textbook. Although the glossaries have been significantly extended in the most recent editions, it is still recommended to use one of the standard English dictionaries.
In this latest edition of the textbook, we have again updated many of the texts and the information they bring. Some new texts and exercises have also been added, with an emphasis on the language used in conventions, treaties and other international and European legal instruments. The glossaries have also been expanded accordingly. We hope to have succeeded in our efforts to present the most recent developments in different legal areas.
The authors of this textbook are the late Dunja M. Vićan, MA, whom we remember with gratitude for her dedicated work in developing the previous editions of this textbook, Zlata Pavić MA (who, with Dunja Vićan, for many years taught English at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb), and Professor Branko Smerdel, Head of the Department for Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb and former Senior Fulbright Scholar teaching Constitutional Law in Zagreb.
