This exhibit was the first comprehensive show that covered Dadaism and Surrealism as a generational art movement. Dadaism, which first arose during World War I almost simultaneously in New York, Zurich, Cologne, and Berlin, was a sort of anti-art movement that reacted to the horrors of World War I. In response, Surrealism was born of the nihilistic sentiment present in Dadaism. The exhibition began with pre-Dadaist works of 1912 and slowly went into Dadaism followed by its growth into the Surrealist movement. The “Heritage” section of the exhibit included work done by abstract expressionists from the 1940s through the 1960s. Among the many noteworthy artists featured in this exhibit are Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Arshile Gorky, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roberto Matta.
